Artificial Sweetener Erythritol is Tied to Increased Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke
added in high levels to processed foods, widely used in sugar-replacement and reduced sugar products. Some people have higher-than-normal levels of erythritol in their blood, which might be leading to an increased risk of blood clots.
Looking at 4,000+ people (US + EU) who were undergoing elective cardiac evaluation, researchers found that those with greater erythritol levels in their blood had a higher chance of experiencing adverse cardiac events ... (and) increased blood clot formation.
In fact, it's best to limit or eliminate all artificial sweeteners.
The merits and shortcomings of alternative sweeteners, such as aspartame, sucralose, stevia and saccharin, have been debated for years ... linked to higher calorie consumption and higher blood sugar levels ... (and) increased (risk of) death from circulatory disease.
• Strokes: A study following 81000 women for 12 years found a marked increase in stroke risk with artificial sweeteners (JAMA, 2019;321(16):1554-1555).
• Cancer: High consumers of artificial sweeteners were found to be at a 13% increased risk for developing obesity-related cancers, including colorectal, stomach, liver, mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophageal, ovarian, endometrial, and prostate cancers (PLoS Med, 2022 Mar 24;19(3):e1003950.
• Diabetes: Using artificial sweeteners was associated with increased risk for obesity and diabetes (Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism, Feb 23, 2017; Brit J of Nutrit, Sept 2014;112(5):725-734), even in people who were not overweight (BMJ, July 21, 2015).
How Artificial Sweeteners May Increase Risk for Diabetes and Weight Gain
• Artificial sweeteners may increase risk for diabetes and weight gain by changing the bacteria in your colon (Nature, Oct 9, 2014;514(7521):181-6; Cell Metab, Nov 4, 2014;20(5):701-3). One week of consuming artificial sweeteners changed the gut bacteria of apparently healthy humans to cause higher blood sugar levels after taking sugared foods and drinks. Obese people who have taken aspartame or saccharin within 24 hours, have much higher blood sugar rises after taking sugar than those who do not use these artificial sweeteners (Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, May 24, 2016). High blood sugar levels call out more insulin and high insulin levels increase weight gain and case inflammation to increase diabetes risk.• Artificial sweeteners light up the brain's pleasure centers, promoting calorie consumption; but as they are calorie-free, you would seek more of other foods (Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism, July 10, 2013).
Sugared Drinks Are Even More Harmful
It is well established that taking in too much sugar, particularly in sugar-sweetened beverages, is associated with weight gain, obesity, type II diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease (JAMA Intern Med, 2014;174(4):516-524). Sugar in liquid form raises blood sugar more quickly than any other type of food. One can of sugar-sweetened soda contains 25 to 50 grams of sugar, the recommended upper limit for sugar for an entire day. Because of their high sugar content and lack of fiber, fruit juices and fruit drinks are just as unhealthful as sodas.
Gas Hobs (are likely to be) Harmful
“12% of current childhood asthma in the US is attributable to gas stove use” (Int J Environ Res Public Health, 2023;20(1):75). Several other studies have found the same associations between gas stoves and childhood asthma (Int J Epidemiol, Dec 2013;42(6):1724-37).
Gas stoves emit air pollutants that can irritate the lungs:
• Nitrogen Dioxide: Breathing NO2 can cause asthma attacks in asthmatic children (Eur Resp J, 2011;38: 303-309) and increases asthma risk in children (Leuk Res, 2013;42:1724–1737).
• Benzene: Unburned gas contains benzene, an established carcinogen (Lancet Oncology, Dec, 2017;18(12):1574-1575).
• Airborne small particles (<2.5 microns) from gas cooking cause lung damage in healthy people (Exp & Mol Med, 2020; 52:311–317 (2020).Backlash Against Gas Stoves
• 2019: Berkeley, California was the first US city to ban natural gas.
• 2021: Seattle, Washington banned natural gas in new buildings.
• 2021: New York City banned gas in new buildings.
• 2022: Los Angeles, California banned most gas appliances in new homes.
I read labels before I buy any food now. It's frightening to see the crap they put in. I phased out soft drinks long ago when I found out how much sugar was in them; I can't say now where I read it, but a study comparing sugar levels found that some standard-sized big name fizzy drinks had about 15 teaspoons of sugar in them. I also recently kicked fruit juices when I realised, belatedly, that 'with no added sugar' didn't mean the same as 'healthy'. And as for artificial sweeteners... ugh... on more than one occasion I've had an upset gut that I'm sure was because of those.
But my biggest food gripe is added water. I haven't gone deeply into it so there may be a good reason for it, but all I can see is, it bulks out food to make it look bigger. I recently popped into the Co-op for some ham as I just had the urge for a sandwich. There was literally one pack of 'cheap basics' ham left on a virtually empty shelf. I wanted that sandwich so... It was like sinking my teeth into a pink sponge, and no wonder - it was 20% water. I don't know how they get away with it.
Isn't that gas hob thing specific to the US? I seem to remember looking into it a while ago when it first came to light and it was down the rather lax safety features/ poor pipework quality rather than the gas hob itself. In the UK we want to get rid of them for green reasons rather than health ones.

Unfortunately not - we have a gas hob (and so does my Mum) - we just hardly ever use it these days, preferring the microwave, slow cooker, etc. It's amazing how you can go from using it for every single meal, to barely at all. (High temp cooking methods >100C are unhealthy anyway).

Note that opening a window and using a cooker hood only helps a bit in alleviating the problem.
This is a controversial one, as I bet you know people taking calcium tablets, who have also been told to eat more dairy.
Wrong, and wrong!
Calcium and Vitamin D Pills May Not Prevent Fractures and incredibly, Calcium from supplements appears to increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and death.
The best methods to strengthen bones are:
• resistance exercise (lifting weights, strength machines),
• weight-bearing exercise, walking, running, dancing.
• do not smoke, restrict alcohol, get vitamin D (preferably from sun/daylight).
• Calcium foods: almonds, oranges, figs, prunes, soy, chick peas, beans, legumes, fortified plant milks, dark greens (kale, broccoli, but less so spinach).
Dairy products: milk, butter & cream are bad, hard cheeses and yogurt are not as bad.
• One meta-analysis of cow’s milk intake and hip fracture studies showed no significant protection.
• More recent studies (of 100k men & women over 2 decades) suggests milk may even increase bone and hip fracture rates.
• Dairy is linked to higher rates of premature death, more heart disease, and more cancer for each daily glass of milk women drank.
There is no strong evidence to show that adding milk to the diet of average people in EU/USA offers any health benefits. A recent PURE Study concluded that milk is healthful in under-developed countries where many people did not get enough to eat, when getting any source of nutrients is more healthful than not getting enough.
How Milk Increases Risk for Heart Attacks and Diabetes
Milk is a high-sugar drink. We know that milk sugar D-galactose causes the same oxidative damage and chronic inflammation that is associated with diabetes, heart attacks, cancers and bone loss. People who drink milk have increased urine levels of inflammatory biomarkers.

Tasty, but not healthy, and sadly even plain old toast has AGEs !
- A review of 17 different studies involving 500k+ people followed for 10 years, found that fried foods increase heart attacks and strokes.
- One study of 100k people followed for 18 years, found that 1+ weekly serving of fried chicken/fish was associated with a significantly higher risk of death.
- Another study followed 75k people for 6-13 years, and found that those who ate meat/fish either fried/roast/grilled/bbq 2+ times per week suffered a marked increase in becoming diabetic.
How Foods Cooked at High Temperatures Can Harm You
When you cook with water, the temperature cannot rise above 100C, and the food sugars combine with the water to form harmless end products.
BUT when carbs are cooked with proteins/fats at high temperatures and without water, the sugars bind to the proteins to form AGEs (advanced glycation endproducts).
AGEs are being formed when the foods brown during cooking > frying, grilling, barbecuing, broiling, roasting, baking, toasting.
AGEs turn on your immune system to cause inflammation that:
- prevents cells from responding to insulin,
- raises blood sugar levels and raises insulin levels,
- which can cause or worsen diabetes
- increases risk for heart attacks and cancers
What To Do?
Use water-based cooking methods: steaming, simmering, blanching, boiling, microwaving.
Sauteing and stir-frying also count as a water-based if the foods are moist; then the temperature stays relatively low, and the foods do not brown.
Limit (eliminate) Fried and Browned Foods
Should spend money on research which is actually useful imo, fried food bad for you, who knew!
