Landmark study reveals link between gut microbes, diet and illnesses
PREDICT is the largest international in-depth nutritional study in the world. It used metagenomics and blood chemical profiling to uncover 15 gut microbes associated with lower risks of common conditions such as obesity, heart disease and type-2 diabetes.
The influence of a person’s diet/microbiome on their health is even stronger than genetics.
A healthy diet contains a mix of foods rich in plants, giving higher levels of ‘good’ gut microbes associated with a lower risk of common illnesses.
“When you eat, you’re not just nourishing your body, you’re feeding the trillions of microbes that live inside your gut.”
“We were surprised to see such large, clear groups of what we informally call ‘good’ and ‘bad’ microbes emerging from our analysis.
Researchers identify mechanism by which exercise strengthens bones and immunity
A mechanosensitive peri-arteriolar niche for osteogenesis and lymphopoiesis
Scientists have identified the specialized environment ('niche') in the bone marrow where new bone and immune cells are produced. The study also shows that movement-induced stimulation is required for the maintenance of this niche, as well as the bone and immune-forming cells that it contains.
... forces created from walking or running are transmitted from bone surfaces along arteriolar blood vessels into the marrow inside bones. Bone-forming cells that line the outside of the arterioles sense these forces and are induced to proliferate. This not only allows the formation of new bone cells, which helps to thicken bones, but the bone-forming cells also secrete a growth factor that increases the frequency of cells that form lymphocytes around the arterioles. Lymphocytes are the B and T cells that allow the immune system to fight infections.
In bone-forming cells with mechanical force senses deactivated, the formation of new bone cells and lymphocytes was reduced, causing bones to become thinner and reducing the ability to clear a bacterial infection.
“We think we’ve found an important mechanism by which exercise promotes immunity and strengthens bones, on top of other mechanisms previously identified by others”.
Why Sugar-Sweetened Drinks are Harmful
• A study of 100k women followed for 20+ years found those who drank 1+ sugar-sweetened beverages per day had an 85% increased risk for liver cancer.
• A study of 28k adults found that those who ate >25% of their daily calories from added sugars had the highest rate of kidney stones.
The highest rises in blood sugar come from sugared drinks - including fruit juices and milk. Foods made with added sugars also cause high blood sugar levels. Excess sugar in your bloodstream is immediately converted to triglycerides, and stored in fat cells around the liver => fatty liver. If you have a fat belly, you are storing most of your fat around your organs (liver) leading to diabetes.
Artificial Sweeteners Are Not Benign
• People who drink large amounts of sugared/sweetened beverages are at increased risk for developing strokes and heart attacks.
• Artificial sweeteners are associated with weight gain, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, heart attacks.
• People who took one diet drink a day were three times more likely to suffer a stroke, have poorer memory, and smaller aging brains.
Inactivity Linked to Arthritis
Most people with arthritis are inactive, overweight, diabetic or pre-diabetic. Inflammation damages joints, and everything that reduces inflammation also helps to reduce pain and joint damage: lose weight, eat anti-inflammatory foods, exercise, lower blood sugar.
Osteoarthritis always worsens with inactivity. A study of 6500 women for 12 years showed that those who exercised regularly had less joint pain. If you have joint pain, keep on moving but slow down if the pain worsens. Avoid impact sports, as the force of your foot hitting the ground can break cartilage.
Colon Bacteria and Arthritis - and - longer version.
Inflammatory types of arthritis (rheumatoid, psoriatic, reactive) may be caused by harmful bacteria in the colon, leading to “auto-immune diseases”. Antibiotics do affect the makeup of colon bacteria, but a better approach is to encourage a healthful anti-inflammatory diet, high in plants and low in meat and sugar.
• a healthy plant-based diet had reduced markers of inflammation and reduced progression of disease.
• more: vegetables, greens, beans, whole grains, fibre, seafood.
• less: refined grains, salt, fried foods, butter, solid oils.

https://vajenda.substack.com/p/unraveling-the-myth-of-menstrual
TLDR;
The notion of menstrual synchronization, where the menstrual cycles of people who spend time together align, is a persistent but baseless myth related to outdated beliefs about menstruation being toxic. The idea gained prominence from a 1971 study that has numerous flaws, such as inaccuracies in menstrual cycle recall and the inclusion of women on oral contraceptives.
Multiple studies have since refuted the existence of menstrual synchronization, and there is no plausible biological explanation for it, highlighting the importance of relying on credible research rather than folklore.
A good listen from a very interesting, articulate speaker ...
Physician Peter Attia talks about the science of longevity — which focuses not only on extending life but on maintaining good health into old age. He explains the possibilities and limits of current medicine and gives Steve Levitt (Freakonomics) his best advice on how to defeat the aging process.
I guess everyone knows this? Don't wash your raw chicken!
Washing raw chicken before cooking does not eliminate bacteria (Salmonella, Campylobacter) and actually increases the risk of foodborne illness by spreading pathogens around the kitchen.
Use a clean cutting board, wipe off surface slime with a paper towel, disinfect work areas afterwards.
Proper cooking, not washing, is the effective method to make chicken safe for consumption.

Atkins/Keto diets may offer a quick way to lose a bit of weight (temporarily) but they are terrible for health.
It's a massive industry that basically tells people they can eat what they want without consequences ... who doesn't like that?
I have a friend who insists on Keto and survives on bacon/eggs and bone broth for a week to 'control' his diabetes, then goes back to his usual diet again. He is unable to see that his normal diet, along with being overweight and inactive are the main issues, and he continues to eat whatever he wants while struggling with his health. The Keto rulebook gives the excuse needed to overcome this major cognitive dissonance. (Interestingly, he also voted Brexit, so make of that what you will).

Anyone still on the cow juice ? I absolutely love all dairy, and grew up in a family consuming 4 pints per day, aged 0 to 13
I've really cut down in the last decade, as it's in no way healthy ...
