I was talking to an old punk on the train on his way home from the punk festival in Blackpool recently - as part of chatting about various gigs he did say he'd seen Joy Division as a support to The Buzzcocks (only a bit jealous). Made me think if you had one go in a time machine to see a gig - what would it be?

Early Elvis (or Million dollar quartet), The Doors at the Whiskey - something in a tiny venue or massive event Live aid / 8 - where when would you go?

hmmm ... interesting question ?

For me, definitely standing at a small venue, bouncing with loyal fans before the band made it big.

One of the best gigs I went to was The Wonder Stuff in Birmingham, before I'd heard of them and before their chart success, supporting The Mission (I think it was). The passion and joy from the die-hard fans was so infectious.

So which band? Maybe Queen, who I never saw live. Although I only know their singles, so it's unlikely they'd be playing many at a pre-breakout small venue! I wonder if they did a TV recording infront of a small audience? Or a fanclub-only invite? That would have been good.

Saying that, REM played 2 nights at a smallish venue in London to mark the anniversary of an early album, and that would have been amazing too. Wish I'd gone to that, and I could have bought tix as a fanclub memeber. But at the time it seemed too expensive at ~£60 each (iirc) plus trains, etc.

Only 1 chance? I suppose I would play it safe, and see REM at one of their MTV Unplugged sessions.
