I don't get it.

It's not in the least bit funny, offensive, or (as far as I can see) with philosophical merit.

For those with the God delusion, the schtick has always been: 

1) God has a plan

2) God loves us

3) God's plan is so important that sometimes it is necessary for us to suffer for his plan

So, on that basis the 'joke' is nothing more than exactly what you would expect to happen in the circumstances outlined. No depth, nothing philosophical, and nothing funny.

So: What am I missing?

I think it's extremely funny, though I have no wish to read any discussions on it. You shouldn't have to do that with a joke. I'm an anti-theist and first heard it told by Ricky Gervais. On the basis of that clip above Noah Edelman isn't much of a comedian because his rendition of it is dreadful; he's telling it as a deep and meaningful topic for discussion. Ricky Gervais told it as a joke and it was funny.

That makes a lot more sense.

I should have watched the RG version.

It was the suggestion that there were philosophical implications that killed the thing stone dead.

^ colour me disappointed! I was just listening to Geoff's podcast (for my regular right-of-centre pov) and he talked about going viral with this. BUT in explaining the quick photo snap while passing the cinema, he revealed that he thought Gladiator was playing on screen 2 ! #ComprehensionFail

I think what's clever about this is there's 2 minor 'in'-jokes here ... understanding these are sequels, and adding the footie reference. And calling him 'the little fellah' is the comedic icing on the cake, when up against Gladiator's might.
