I do, I think he's a bully who is never wrong, when he is wrong he bullies more ends the call or blocks you. So basically he's like a Tory MP.

Listening to the viral soundbites, it's easy to understand why you might think that, but his show is on for 2.5hrs every day. What he hates is people spouting the same old tabloid tosh that he's heard 100 times before - and yes, he will steam-roller over them, or relish tying them in knots of nonsense. But these calls are very seldom.

I was just listening to this old show on catchup - believe it or not, he's very compassionate and understanding about how people were hoodwinked into voting Brexit, and how most of us (himself included) were not qualified to vote in the first place.

Or the vast majority not giving a toss that a small number of words have been changed

I think it's very sad that they don't (not that I believe the vast majority would, if questioned) because it's wanton censorship of something that doesn't need to be censored, and (as far as I know) nobody has complained about the texts anyway. It's also not a small number, there are hundreds of changes. And it's the thin end of the wedge. Imagine how literature might end up if this had caught on and any reference to appearance etc were deemed potentially offensive. Would you rather pick up Lord of the Rings and read about dwarves, or differently-statured warriors? Or Lord of the Flies, the one about the differently-shaped boy who actually wasn't fat, just larger-waistlined than the other cisgendered males on the island?

My main concern would be over the lazy stereotypes that still continue - fat people are lazy, ugly people are bad, etc.

We still get film baddies (James Bond) with facial disfigurements, wanting to take over/destroy the world, for example, and it's very rare to see fat people in anything other than when their fatness is part of the story line.

I'm lucky - normal body weight, no facial disfigurements, wasn't bullied at school - but many people aren't so lucky, and negative stereotypes can certainly be damaging.

From kids, we are bombarded by ideas of damsels in distress, shiny white knights, etc - it's only in the last 20 years that things have started to shift towards more inclusivity (for the better).

And the fact that both versions are still available (after public 'outrage') - it's a bit like the cut-for-TV versions of films showing on a Sunday afternoon - if you want the uncut version, get the DVD - there's nothing lost. You don't want your toddler wandering round upsetting granny with "Penis breath! Penis breath!"

You must have insider information, because Jimbo's next on their hit list. Next up - The Bible for its blatant anti-semitism, and The Merchant of Venice for the same reason.

In a similar vein, what's you're thoughts on this, @wowbagger ?

Delilah - why it's a controversial song -Β The Welsh rugby anthem will not be performed or sung by choirs at Wales rugby internationals

I had no clue these were the lyrics ! ?Β

I saw the light on the night that I passed by her window
I saw the flickering shadow of love on her blind
She was my woman
As she deceived me I watched and went out of my mind

My, my, my Delilah. Why, why, why Delilah

I could see, that girl was no good for me
But I was lost like a slave that no man could free
At break of day when that man drove away I was waiting
I crossed the street to her house and she opened the door
She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more

So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me Delilah I just couldn't take anymore

I too had no clue those were the lyrics, and not singing it is the right decision. But that's not the same issue, because they're not censoring it. They're just leaving it alone.

Interesting. So a partial-ban is OK, but if they were to edit/censor the lyrics, that would be bad ? As it's corrupting the original artwork ?

Besides, it's just the official choir that won't be singing it - the song will still be sung by the fans, and likely by Tom Jones too (although if this were in my playbook, I would have quietly retired it, or at least reduced it to a small part of a medley).

Next up - The Bible

I suppose preachers of the Bible have done what Tom Jones should have done - sidelined the less savoury parts (and there are lots!) that no longer get talked about.

So do you think there's ever a justification for censoring anything ?

I don't think there are rights and wrongs here, personally, just (50) shades of grey. I think the UK has been doing censorship about right - things like the 9 o'clock watershed, no swearing on the radio, clear distinction between programmes and adverts. *Thinking* ... apart from the 80s video nasty hysteria of course, and the slowness to introduce the R18 cert. Obviously, you can still buy books like Mein Kampf and so on (are there any other books like that??)

PENGUIN: a surprising list of recently banned booksΒ - not really surprising!

WIKI: List of books banned by governments

The point of this thread was to highlight and discuss the rewriting of established works of literature, specifically by Roald Dahl and now Ian Fleming. I've expressed my opinion on that, which is this: it's wrong because it's not up to fluffy sensitivity readers to decide what others may or may not find offensive. People should make their own minds up, and it's up to parents and schoolteachers to fill in the gaps.

I'm not interested in a discussion on Tom Jones songs or censorship in general. I joined film-themed forums to talk about films and have created non-film themed threads for one reason only - to try to get some traffic in this forum. I don't have time to bicker in a thread in which I've already stated my opinion - so I'm leaving this one now.

Not bothered either way - that's up to Facebook to police their platform. Seems pretty trivial though, considering some of the hate that I have seen that goes unchecked.

The whole idea of policing and censorship is going to plague all the social media platforms for as long as they exist - by definition, it's literally impossible to please everyone.

Life Of Brian specifically - one of my TOP20 all time fave films. But it was banned in certain UK towns, back in the day. At least nowadays we've got the DVD and streaming, so we can watch it as nature intended, whenever we wish.

The problem with clips like this, when taken out of context, is they can be weaponised against minorities. Same as the JΓΌrgen the German sketches by Harry Enfield - very funny at the time, embedded alongside Wayne & Waynetta et al, but as far as I remember, one sketch in particular has been scrubbed from the web now (we discussed this way back, on TDF).
