I think that is misdirected.

We cannot go ‘cold turkey’, so we still need fossil fuel companies to be active, although, one would hope, at an ever reducing rate.

It is for governments to take action to reduce the demand for fossil fuel (together with individual or group action to conserve energy).

Good clip, though.

Not sure which 'clip' you're specifically referring to, but sure - no one is calling to close down the petrol stations tomorrow.

But we should not be publicly subsiding the exploration for new oil reserves. Instead, we should be rerouting all that cash into public transport and renewables. But that takes strong eco leadership which is sadly lacking globally.

It's certainly weird to think that in 10 or so years, the prices of beef/dairy and international flights needs to be out of reach of most of the population. But that's the way it has to go to get even close to 1.5C (or likely that's already 2.0C.) Of course, this does not mean setting the cows free to roam the streets, just not breeding any more, and instead pouring all of that public cash subsidy into growing crops for human consumption (and not animal feeds).

Big changes ahead. Scary times.

I agree 100% that no new money should be spent on fossil fuel expansion.

It just seems perverse to say that no one should hold shares in oil companies when we will absolutely need oil for some time to come.

What I suppose I’m saying is that you should put all efforts into getting governments to create an environment where we stop using fossil fuels and the oil companies just naturally decline, rather than wasting effort trying to hamper companies that will inevitably continue as long as there is a demand.

Every solar panel or wind turbine is a few kg of oil, gas, or coal for which there is no longer a market.

Yeah, I see what you mean, but the problem is things are not progressing fast enough, so we need to try every approach - carrots and sticks. The global temperatures this year are OFF THE SCALE, with temperatures previously predicted for the 2040s being experienced right now.

Even in eco discussions amongst sensible people, we are still talking about the kind of planet that our children and (unborn) grand-children will inherit, when in fact the best estimates are predicting the next 10-20 years as being absolutely life-changing for billions of people.

Sheesh, it seems weird to even type that out, as personally I'm not really having those direct discussions with people around me either.

This sounds like an eco-doomism scare story, but it's impossible to argue against the global need to break profit-driven growth and over-consumption>

An interesting and necessary debunk ... that reminds me we did (some of) this in school !

How can we stop burning fossil fuels if we still need everything else they make?

Petroleum-based products like pharmaceuticals, electronics, fertilizers, plastics and a host of other crucial modern world commodities are all impossible to make without first producing hundreds of millions of tonnes of gasoline, kerosene, and diesel. It's just the way the process works ...

At least, that's what the fossil fuel industry would like you to believe. Except, that is NOT TRUE. An independent petroleum industry consultant explains how it REALLY works.
