I watched episode one on iPlayer. It's a pirate sitcom, set almost entirely on a (distractingly) green-screened pirate ship, and the latest product from Taika Waititi and somebody else. After the latest Thor and this I think Waititi's just coasting, and badly. I found this dismally unfunny throughout and won't go within a mile of another episode. Rhys Darby is almost watchable, but he's only recycling Murray the agent from Flight of the Conchords, and the material here is poor.
I expect, of course, to be disagreed with. ?
Edit: I thought it had premiered on BBC but apparently it's been somewhere else first and gathered praise for positive LGBT representation, which must refer to that shit camp character. Waititi himslef is apparently in it later, but wasn't in the pilot. It won't make me watch any more though.
Honestly, I just don't get Taika Waititi ... but I am glad he's out there, doing his thang.
I didn't like 'What We do In The Shadows' at all (like 1 stretched TV sketch), and 'Jojo The Rabbit' was disappointing and too daft (not helped by the hype).
Wilderpeople was OK though, and I've not yet started on Reservation Dogs.
I forgot about Reservation Dogs - I think I started watching it and forgot all about it, and didn't finish. What We Do etc, I enjoyed the film and first couple of seasons on a 'doesn't necessarily make me laugh but enjoyable enough to watch' basis, but found season 3 tedious. Jojo Rabbit left me pretty cold, but I quite enjoyed Wilderpeople. Now you've made me think about him, I realise I'm not really a fan of his. His best film, which he co-wrote and directed, is his first, Eagle vs Shark. Boy, his next, was pretty good, but more drama than comedy. It's a familiar story, but his best work appears to be from that period when few people outside his home country had heard of him... okay, with the possible exception of Thor Ragnarok, in which the funniest joke is Korg's line about not printing enough pamphlets.
I've watched all of this so far (as a pirate, lol) and it certainly gets better as the season goes on, the first couple of episodes were more like Maid Marian and her Merry Men. Not bothered by the green screen use, tbh.
I really enjoyed it once it got going. I thought it was hilarious.
