Let's get this thread back on topic with a bookmark from a while ago.
@jez - this is something we've not yet discussed in this thread.
How should we deal with the trans-watchers who proudly proclaim they can always tell the sex of a person, when they do misgender and hassle butch lesbians, Susan Boyle lookalikes, and cancer survivors ? [ITV]

If I was in a public urinal and that woman walked in I don't think I'd bat an eyelid*. Would I then be guilty of 'misgendering' and, while I'm here, is that considered a hate crime? (I ask because I honestly don't know.) By her own admission she is a 'masculine female' and since the whole point of that item is 'women mistake masculine female for man', all I think is, 'Yes, I can see why, but so what?'
Β
* Just to be clear - I am a man.
Someone said on twitter they prefer they/them pronouns, so no need for a gotchya - that was just an example of misgendering, as I've encountered several examples and discussions over the last year or so.
@wowbagger - no need to worry - not batting an eyelid is the perfect response, as 99.99% of trans people just want to pee in peace.
@driver8. But she's not transgender, at least not according to that linked article. She's a woman who is nervous about being mistaken for a man by other women following a mastectomy. Non-batting of eyelids would not be out of any solidarity with transgender people, but because I think she does look like a man.
But I agree that not reacting is the right reaction. It's why I roll my eyes whenever another celeb comes out as gay - it shouldn't be news.
What percentage of sexual assault happens in public toilets? And how many of those assaults are committed by men posing as women?
And can you back up your claim about a rise in violence with more than anecdotes?
I'll try again: What percentage of sexual assault happens in public toilets? And how many of those assaults are committed by men posing as women? Can you back up your claim about a rise in violence with more than anecdotes?
Β
I'll add: What percentage of trans-people commit sexual assaults? Is it higher than the percentage of cis-men who commit sexual assaaults?
Why is my post "awaiting moderation"? Is it because I repeated my questions that went unanswered, and it was flagged as spam?
Also, how is asking for percentages the same as claiming that "it never happens"?
No, it wasn't what I was saying because it wasn't what I wrote! You could, you know, just read my sentences as typed.
Since you have no answers, I think it's safe to say that you have no idea whether sexual assault is more or less prevalent in public toilets than outside public toilets. Neither have I. And I have no idea why gender-separated toilets came about in the first place. Was it specifically because of sexual assaults? I ask you, because this seems to be a topic near and dear to your heart, so it would be natural that you would know.
I'm sure there are women who have been abused by men, who would prefer to never see another man for the rest of their lives, who think it would be a great idea if all men were chemically castrated, or if a curfew was put in place for all men, but I don't think we should design our policies around that.
How do you propose we decide which people get to access which toilets? Should we have armed guards doing chromosome tests outside every single one? I think there is a risk that people would p*** their pants long before the test was completed.
Why is my post "awaiting moderation"? Is it because I repeated my questions that went unanswered, and it was flagged as spam?I'm not sure - it's automatic. Likely a combination of 'new user' + 'frequency of posting', so should relax over time.
Quite simple, you use the ones with the sex you were born with.
Whoa! You answered a question!
Ok, so this person should use the women's toilet, right?
And this person should use the men's toilet, of course.
And what about people who don't have the usual XX/XY chromosomes, which toilet should they use?
