I've just taken a few minutes to search a few uk news sites, Arthur, and they all say the same thing - police are pursuing all lines of enquiry but so far there is no evidence that this crime was gender-related.
Sure, that's always the official line to not aggravate tensions.
I don't think they're that far apart, Arthur. If there was evidence, then they would think gender identity was a factor. Motives might not come out until the trial, whenever that may be. But the point raised above is valid - if gender is ruled out, then the inclusion of the news item (tragic as it was) in this thread is premature.
I wonder if some of you actually went to school, or were teleported down as adults ?? In my schools at least, in the late 70s/early 80s, it was the worst insult to be called a bum boy. In some ways, it must be far tougher these days, even though apparently many kids are cool with all things LGBTQ+.
Transgender children face discrimination even at primary school level
For many young transgender people, socially transitioning can be a highly difficult experience. Research has shown that discrimination and harassment can be common during adolescent transition, and trans teenagers frequently experience bullying not only from peers but from adults too.
A recent study (British Journal of Educational Psychology) looks at a group of children who socially transition at an even earlier age, during primary and early secondary school. Through interviews with parents and children, the work finds a culture of cisnormativity (*) within schools and a failure to protect trans children, potentially leading to serious consequences to children’s education and mental health.
(*) cisnormativity = a form of normative thought which assumes that everybody is cisgender and has the same needs.
- institutional cisnormativity in UK schools - trans pupils in unsafe environments, contributing to drop-out and trauma.
- educational injustice due to cisnormative attitudes, making it acceptable for trans children to lose access to education, or to experience trauma.
- a failure to protect trans children - educators, schools and school leaders need to take action to protect trans children.
not sure about this application of Newspeak - will the originals be available or slowly (or quickly) replaced by the new versions. Will keep people arguing for ages over the various edits.
Augustus Gloop in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is now described as “enormous”. In The Twits, Mrs Twit is no longer “ugly and beastly” but just “beastly”.
Hundreds of changes were made to the original text – and some passages not written by Dahl have been added.
In The Witches, a paragraph explaining that witches are bald beneath their wigs ends with the new line: “There are plenty of other reasons why women might wear wigs and there is certainly nothing wrong with that.”
I think this is very sad. Instead of editing the books they could just burn them...
Yet his description of the 3 white male farmers is completely ok as they're fair game?
I think it's only with a modern eye that we see black = bad and white = good as racism. In reality, black = bad because it's the scary darkness who knows what nastiness is out there and white = good because it's the light and we can see what's coming. I watched a documentary a good few years ago that tried to argue that Star Wars was racist as the main heroes were white (this was after RoTJ so Lando existed) and the bad guys were led by a black guy (Darth Vader, who was himself led by a white guy, and all his minions wore suits of white). Frankly, you can argue any old crap and read what you want into anything.
hmm ... this all distills down to #allLivesMatter though, which ignores both nuance and our normalised positions of stale pale maleness. All changes can seem daft from our viewpoint as it is the 'normal' so why change it?
Black people are the minority in (most?) English-speaking countries, so we can make efforts to level the playing field.
It's like Apu in The Simpsons - a show where most white characters are very flawed, but a whole generation of Indian-heritage US kids were nick-named 'Apu' at school and teased with stereotypes. As innocent as the show's intentions were, rascists are gonna bully.
This thread went off topic !
