Good grief ... just when we thought it couldn't get any worse ... yet again, tax cuts for the richest, paid for by the poorest.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/money/other/scrapping-state-pension-triple-lock-under-consideration-warns-minister/ar-AA12nHuh

https://metro.co.uk/2022/09/30/kwasi-kwarteng-and-liz-truss-eyeing-benefits-cut-to-pay-for-tax-plans-17478448/?ito=socialmetrouktwitter

No surprises then ...

Today's YouGov Poll (30 Sept):

* 81% want u-turn re bankers bonus cap

* 82% want u-turn on 45% tax cut for high earners

* 87% want parliament recalled immediately

* 86% think govt have lost control of economy

hehe ... you see mini caveat, I see a second update so as not to mislead (ie: the pound has not started to rise consistently, and is still not out of trouble).

It's incorrect to assume the 'left wing press' (ie: Mirror + Guardian) aren't reporting on this, when they clearly are reporting the facts as they happen (as evidenced by a 10 second Google).

The Guardian is not as biased as many like to think - much of their actual news reporting is pretty balanced, but it's their opinion pieces that get all the attention - Toynbee, Monbiot, et al - in the physical newspaper, these wouldn't be shouty front pages (ala Murdoch), but buried after page 10.

@Jez: genuine questions so I can try to understand your opinions.

Do you think the government has been doing a good job over the last (say) 12 months?Β

What is it about a Labour government that makes you think it would be worse (if indeed that is your belief)?

It seems that Truss is starting to backtrack on promises she made on pensions and benefits.

Earlier she said that she would retain the triple lock.

Now, when asked, she said the relevant minister is 'looking at' the question.

So, from a definite promise to complete evasion.

Β

Although, to be fair, to finance the tax cut for the top earners, she has to find the money somewhere.

I don't think she'd dare go after the pension triple lock as that's her core voting base (though I think a lot would still vote for her as they've always voted Tory so why stop now). More likely she'll look at cutting Universal Credit and try to push those living off savings back to work.

There are people able to live off their savings ? Even at the low interest rates of the past few years?? ?

But then, interest rates might hit 10% next year, so even if their Universal Credit goes down, will they still be OK?

I suspect that few people will live entirely on their savings (exc pensions).

Some people might be augmenting their Universal Credit/Pensions by using interest or even capital from said savings.

The poorest won't have such savings so they will most definitely not be OK if these incomes are not increased in line with inflation.

It's reasonably clear that Truss and Kwartang are away with the fairies, but it is to be hoped that there will be sufficient tories decent enough (or sufficiently scared for their seats) to vote with other parties to block this appalling attack on the most vulnerable members of society.

There's a fundamental failure in the system (both parties) - the party members should not be the ones to decide the leader, it should be the MPs. The Tory MPs would have voted for Sunak, and we could have avoided all this mess (I wasn't following the leadership campaign closely, but apparently Sunak predicted this would happen based on Truss's plans).

How on earth is Truss supposed to work effectively as leader, without majority support of her MPs?

Sheesh ... what a sh*tshow !

Yes, the party voting for the leader doesn't work well. Would be a big change to make it MPs voting. Can't see it changing.

Quite the volte-face this morning, but not enough and lots of damage already done.

Interesting, thanks for sharing - cos yes, I'd not seen mention of this either. Some ideas -Β

- the recent polls were for a general election, but these are apparently council elections (so hardly newsworthy, really).
- Helmshore - voting is often for specific local policies of bins/waste, parks, etc. [Personally, I would vote Green locally].
- Facit & Shawforth - the anti-tory vote was split, so the Tories only got 43%. (This is a flaw in the system, imo.)
- some (many?) votes could have been cast postally in advance of the latest events (just a theory). [Personally, I would choose to vote asap, in advance].

As for the EU/World - probably best you google your own sources. Note that the centrist FT is critical of the govt's performance.
From what I've read:
- this is now an unusually far-right govt, way ahead of similar countries,
- UK is performing poorly, financially,
- of course, everyone (bar the USA) is struggling, but EU seems to be giving more help to its citizens than UK.

Sure, Jez - Germany has been hit hard cos of (over-) reliance on Russian gas (likely a product of geography).

The fuel crisis and ongoing war are completely separate to Truss's crashing of the pound, spooking the markets, and emergency pensions bailout.

Inflation up to April 2022 - note how poorly the UK has been doing (apart from 2021) since Brexit.

No, a councillor rather than an M.P..

(Interesting sub factoid: she was at Cambridge with Kwartang, and, apparently, he was known as an arrogant little tosser even then.)
