Two things here -

(1) it's a flaw in democracy - the need to be popular to get elected. Look at the 45% tax U-turn. I hate that any opposition party 'needs' to take the opposing view, with an eye on what is popular.

(2) Corbyn espoused what he thought was right, and look where that got him (and the party) !

Interesting ... and that could explain your apparent cognitive dissonance (we all do it) - justifying the decision to be anti-Labour over this one issue, by finding faults in much of what else they are doing.

Yes, fair enough. Meanwhile, my general problem with right-wing politics is the endless promotion of consumerism to elevate profits + growth over people + morals, eg, top of my head:Β

- companies merge to increase 'efficiency' by laying off staff, meanwhile paying massive exec bonuses and shareholder dividends.

- disregard for the environment over profits and efficiency - from factory farms to dumping sewage, to deliberate lies by oil companies.

- supermarkets screwing farmers so much they rely on govt subsidy (which is basically the taxpayers subsidising the supermarkets). So what, if 2L of milk was 5p dearer?

- massive car makers: faking emissions reports, stalling on fault recalls (how many will die?)

- ?? so many !!

The recent minibudget could have helped level the increasing wealth disparity, eg: increasing minimum wage, eliminating tax <Β£20k, investments in sustainable energy and public transport, etc.

If you're born into privilege, it's hard to see outside the bubble, and easy to blame the poor for being lazy - that's why so many actors and footballers (for example) are unusual in being leftwing millionaires.

As an aside, here's a pro-tip for everyone - highlight a phrase or paragraph and hit the quote button (rather than quoting the entire post) >

That is an absurd speculation. There are many technical reasons why that just wouldn't have happened.

If anyone were to come up with a 'super-duper new connector' that actually had advantages over USB C, they would be able to get the EU to enhance the directive.

Remember, though, this directive concerns the connector required for charging - not data transfer. (Although USB 4 II can transfer data at 80 GIGA bits per second through a USB C connector, enough for more than 30 4k TV streams at once, so it's unlikely that anyone's going to be worrying about it being too slow for a very considerable length of time.)

The many advantages of a universal charger and connector far outweigh any concerns about what may or may not happen in the distant future.

My work MacBook Pro has just 4 USB-C [Thunderbolt 3] ports and I have to use a dongle if I want any USB-A devices. My phones are now all USB-C.

USB-C 3.2 has a throughput of 20 GB/s, TB3 has a throughput of 40 GB/s. Makes sense that there's now going to be a standard for all new phones and computers. I didn't get a power supply with my new work iPhone SE (that still has the poxy lightning port), so less things for the phone companies to include with new phones and so less not-very-obsolete tech goes to the landfill.

I don't think so. Last thing we need is another proprietary connector that no-one else uses. My first few mobile phones each had different power / data connector with non-standard plugs (not that standards was a thing with the competing mobile companies in those days). USB-C also works both ways up, plug in and go; the man hours I must have lost trying to fit USB-A (and those mini & micro varieties) the right way up to fit the socket. Good that the EU now has asked for this.

With the removal of the headphone socket I expect wireless charging to be the next standard, so no connectors needed at all.

They just do. It's neither difficult nor against EU regulations.

It's analogous to car lighting regulations. There are certain lights that you must have, but that does not mean that if you find some benefit to having new lights that you cannot add them.

Not true.

They can put what they like on their devices. They must simply adhere to the common charging regulation so that people can use a single cable. That's in addition to any wonderful new technology they may invent and develop.

I hope that's cleared up your concerns.

(I think standardised chargers are a great thing. ?)

Ash nails it: "I know what it's like to grow up under a Tory government, and it's shit" says Liz Truss in her first speech to conference as Conservative Party leader.
