I see Rishi has announced asylum centres to be available in France, this makes sense. I believe France offered these before but Boris turned them down. Looks like Rishi will be pissing off the ERG members.

Match of the Day going out without presenters or pundits tonight after key people withdrew in support for Gary. Good for them!

Yet more evidence that actual comedians should be running the country, rather than the pretend-politicians we end up with >

Of course, if you can post links that show any Labour government had arrangements with Rwanda, or were insisting that they were prepared to break international law to persecute migrants, please post.

How can tax breaks for the wealthiest be justified >

- Abolish the £1.07m cap that workers can accumulate in lifetime pensions before having to pay extra tax.
- Tax-free yearly pension pot rising from £40k to £60k.

When we've got junior doctors on actual strike ? >

This is doing the rounds ...

... common sense has left politics, nowadays it's all about grandstanding and point-scoring for soundbites and short-term wins.

I pity poor jezzer who will be desperately searching the internet for news of the last time a Labour chancellor gave away so much to the top 1%.

Just for balance, you understand.

I think the argument was that Doctors were using their pensions as a way to dodge tax/ limit their tax exposure and once they'd hit the limit they were retiring as they were either forced to pay tax on the pension or ended up back in the top tax brackets. This is intended to keep them working longer. I think it's great that we're helping out people with over a million pounds in savings whilst denigrating people doing similar jobs but only earning £28k a year.

Yeah, I heard that too, along with the arguments that: (1) it helps way more people that are non-doctors, and (2) for the estimated 15000 doctors it might help to retain, this will cost £66k/doc/year (so yes, not very efficient!)

- Abolish the £1.07m cap that workers can accumulate in lifetime pensions before having to pay extra tax.

And according to the excellent News Agents podcast (which Jeremy Hunt admitted to listening to!) the main reason for the change is to allow the super rich to avoid paying inheritance tax - bung all your money into a pension pot that will get passed down to your kids, tax-free. Nice.

There's a very strong argument that assets and wealth should be taxed, as well as (rather than?) earned incomes.

Just 25,000 people/companies own 50% of UK land. Incredible. (Breakdown - includes foreign ownership) - many owners just sat on the land, accruing value, that could otherwise be used to build homes.

And another eye-opening statistic is that (almost) 50% of home-owners are >65yo (with under 45s just 12%).
